The night-time-effect
The night-time-effect was the main visual of this backdrop design. At dusk, hundreds of flood lights illuminated the buildings at the Wilhelmplatz. The illuminated buildings formed the walls which were covered by the dark night-time sky. This transformed the Wilhelmplatz into a closed room which conveyed comfort and protection to the people. The backdrop was a perfect setting for the events to follow. The actors on this evening were soldiers of the Armed Forces, who were to honour Adolf Hitler on his birthday. The pillars featuring the Imperial Eagle were illuminated separately to frame the action on the stage. The soldiers as such also became part of the backdrop. In formation at the plaza’s property lines and illuminated by torches, they became an architectural component of the stage image on the Wilhelmplatz.
